2018 was an exciting year for music fans, with plentiful releases ranging from first releases by up-and-coming artists to well-awaited comeback albums from popular groups. While looking forward to the new year, it is obvious that 2019 will also be bringing up some new sounds. Here are some of the already announced albums that we are most awaiting so far.
Vampire Weekend – Father of the Bride
Release date: unannounced
After their hiatus, Vampire Weekend made their comeback at Chicago’s Lollapalooza in August, where frontman Ezra Koenig said that their fourth album “is done now. I mean, we’re mastering it, but it’s done.” As for the sound, he has said that it will be “a lil more springtime,” which also may hint that the release date will be sometime during spring.
Cherry Glazerr – Stuffed & Ready
Release date: February 1, 2019
Cherry Glazerr’s last LP, Apocalipstick, proved to fans that the group was not just a passing fad. Their next album, titled Stuffed & Ready, will be released on February 1st, as announced on the band’s Instagram page (@cherryglazerr). They released their first single, “Daddi,” in early November. This song keeps the band’s quintessential sound with Clementine’s iconic voice while simultaneously creating a new sound, making this track telling of the direction the band is headed towards for Stuffed & Ready.
Puzzle – X Hail
Release date: January 4, 2019
Sprouting from the group The Garden, Fletcher Shears’ solo project Puzzle is sitting on an album that has been long awaited by fans. Shears has been teasing the album since January of 2018 when he tweeted that his “new Puzzle album, ‘X Hail’ is sprinting around the corner.” After moving the release date, it is now set to be released on the first Friday of the new year.
Spendtime Palace – All Inclusive Romantic Getaway
Released date: January 2019
Costa Mesa based band Spendtime Palace is set to release their second LP sometime this January. The band posted the album art on their Instagram (@spendtime.palace) in early November. Producer Kyle Mullarky, who has also worked with The Growlers and Allah-Las, is credited for working on this new album. According to All Inclusive Romantic Getaway’s tracklist, the album will feature two previously released singles, as well as nine other new tracks.
The Japanese House – Good At Falling
Release Date: March 1, 2019
The Japanese House’s much anticipated debut album is set to arrive early this year. Two singles from the album, “Lilo” and “Follow My Girl,” have already been released. The album was produced by a handful of notable artists including The 1975’s George Daniel.
Finish Ticket – untitled release
Release date: unannounced
After the release of one LP in 2014 and one EP 2015, California native indie band Finish Ticket seemed to have disappeared from the music scene. Luckily for fans, the band has recently announced a definite comeback and are set to release an album later this year. After four years without a release and a major lineup change, it’ll be interesting to see what Finish Ticket’s sound now has to offer.
SWMRS – Berkeley’s on Fire
Release date: February 15, 2019
The rising alternative rock group SWMRS is set to release their second full length album this February. This LP is said to bring a “sea change.” They have released two singles off of the album: the title track, “Berkeley’s on Fire,” and “April in Houston.” SWMRS is known for their passion of striving towards creating something new within the rock genre. According to the band’s Spotify, “You think you’re in familiar rock territory . . . when suddenly an electronic beat kicks in that throws you for a loop.”
Toro y Moi – Outer Peace
Release date: January 18, 2019
After the release of his single “Freelance” and its accompanying music video, Toro y Moi announced his sixth studio album Outer Peace. This album follows his 2017 album release Boo Boo. In December, he released the first two singles on an EP titled Ordinary Pleasure. The new album’s track list has been released, confirming that it will have nine songs, seven of which are previously unreleased.
Girlpool – What Chaos Is Imaginary
Release date: February 1, 2019
The Los Angeles indie duo Girlpool is back after a year and a half since their last LP. According to the band, “2019 will see drum machines and synthesizers and beautiful/new harmonies and huge guitars and at least one orchestral breakdown by a string octet.” They have released three singles off of What Chaos Is Imaginary as of now. Girlpool is also going on a North America tour with artist Hatchie.
Wallows – untitled release
Release Date: 2019
After the successful release of their Spring EP, Wallows has been all talk about their first full-length LP, set to release sometime this year. The band has been active on social media, teasing the release of the album with photos and videos from in the studio, and recently tweeted teasing a tour for the album: “so we should tour with the album you say?”
American Football – American Football (III)
Release date: March 22, 2019
American Football originally released their first eponymous album in 1999 and, after a long break up, released their second in 2016. Now, the third American Football is being teased on the band Instagram page. The single “Silhouettes” was released in mid October, and shows the direction this iconic band may take with this new album release.
These are just a handful of the albums we know most about as of now, but make sure to look out for more releases that will be announced throughout the year. Multiple bands and artists, such as The Marias, Tame Impala and Grimes, have hinted at new releases that we will hopefully see sometime during this new year.
