The Garden is back with their fifth album, ‘Mirror Might Steal Your Charm.’ The Garden is an experimental twin duo, with Wyatt Shears as singer and bassist, and Fletcher Shears on drums. The twins originate from Orange, California in 2011, where they quickly gained popularity within the local punk scene and became known for their energetic performances and DIY style in their music and fashion. They released their debut album ‘The Life and Times of a Paperclip’ in 2013 and then proceeded to release two more albums that same year. Although their music can be categorized into many genres, including electro punk, post punk, and experimental, they prefer to stay undefined and stress that the band and their sound will forever be evolving. To describe this, they invented the term “Vada Vada,” which they define as “freedom of expression without boundaries or guidelines of any sort.”
‘Mirror Might Steal Your Charm’ was self produced and recorded in one burst of creativity. This was a new approach for the twins, but just one way they continue their “vada vada” ideology by continuing to keep evolving and shifting their sound. The unmatched attractive weirdness is made evident in this album by bringing back the qualities from their early songs. With songs that are unnerving yet still feel natural, their chaotic genius mixture of raw punk and electronic experiments creates a unique experience of sound that can be found with no other band. The duo is currently on tour for the album, and will be doing a home show at the Observatory in Santa Ana on May 4.
