Oregon-based band Laundry perfectly walks the line between funk and indie rock, with songs like “Oxygen” providing groovy basslines, “Drive” with a soft indie pop quality, and “Parking Lots” with a guitar-driven rock sound. No matter what you’re looking for, you’re bound to find a song you love in Laundry’s discography.
Their first album The Quandary seemed to have the most indie rock and funk influences, with a heavier sound than their latest album Affirmations. Their debut is filled with songs that are guaranteed to get you dancing, like “Take U Back” and “Natural Flavor” with funky basslines from bassist Cal Fenner. Contrasting those tracks, songs like “21st Century Blues” draw on classic indie rock with a more grunge sound and a beat from drummer Nikolas Barber that’s perfect for moshing to.
Affirmations features vocals from Kiki Parrosien in addition to their original singer and guitarist Riley Sommers, who contributed all of the vocals in their first album. The addition of Kiki Parrosien’s vocals and the shift of the instrumentals in an indie pop direction makes these new songs brighter – just like the bright and colorful cover art of the album. However, Laundry doesn’t lose their original sound. They draw on their funk influences with songs like “Lonely Mess” and bring back the heavy rock quality with “Travelling Salesman” on the new album.
