LA-based indie group Acres Even just dropped their debut EP entitled Rose Gold. Their sound is honest and emotional, and that is highlighted in this four-piece collection of catchy tunes. It is a journey of different tempos, instruments, and lyrical poetry.
Starting off with the first single the band ever dropped, “Separate” begins with a guitar riff that hooks you right away. This song poses the question of whether or not to “separate or stay the same” when in a less than ideal relationship; a message I think is more relatable than many of us would like to admit. The slight distortions of the vocals and guitar also add another layer to this meaningful and melodic song and make it my favorite track of the EP. Following up next is “Ocean Full of Brake Lights.” I had the pleasure of seeing Acres Even play live and this song and its catchy melody always remind me of that night. Even listening from the comforts of home, I am still inclined to get up and dance around to relive all the memories that have been tied to this song. It is a perfectly simple addition to any group of songs that bring you back to the time of live music.
Entering the second half of the EP, the next two songs are brand new. “Decorated Shelf” is a chill, soft-hearted song that reminds me of scenes of park picnics on sunny days. This song tells of a girl who is ready to move on and forget the events of her past. My favorite lyrics from the chorus are: “And she’s happiest knowing it won’t end the same. And she feels relief knowing that it won’t remain.” To me, this speaks of beginning a new chapter of life, not wanting to feel burdened with what she has experienced before, and welcoming change. Her perspective is beautifully told through the bittersweet melody and vocals. The sentimental tones continue with “Come Home.” This mostly acoustic piece is a raw display of everything this band has to offer. More layers are added as the song goes on, until it crashes together like huge waves during a storm. You get caught up in the whirlwind of feelings that make your heart break and feel warm at the same time. It is the perfect ending to the journey that is Rose Gold.
Acres Even has done a spectacular job of taking the listener on an exploration of emotions and sound. It is a pleasure for the ears as well as the mind. For fans of Death Cab for Cutie and The Walters, this might just be what you’ve been looking for to spice up your music library. My praise can only do this EP so much justice, so make sure you give it a listen next time you’re in the mood for a little reflection and lots of catchy tracks.
