socal sounds: flamango bay

Performing together since 2015, Flamango Bay is a Berkeley-based indie band that has recently relocated to Los Angeles. Made up of Ikaika Gunderson, Bodhi Lucero, Dash Goss Post, and Georgia Manou, this group of friends have created a sound that mixes influences such as jazz, rock, R&B, and current indie rock. From playing house shows to Gilman, the band was very active playing shows regularly and really cultivating a local fan base prior to the pandemic.

In early 2020, the band released their track “Venus” which really highlights each member’s strengths and features many of their genre influences. With vocals and guitar tag-teamed by Manou and Gunderson, the melody and harmonies add a sweet symphony to the lucrative lyrics that promote empowerment. Lucero’s bass lines take control during the song’s jazz-like breakdown. This flows flawlessly into another breakdown controlled by Post’s driving rhythm on drums, creating a song that seamlessly intersects jazz and classic rock influence.

Quarantine has not stopped the band from safely creating. Flamango Bay released a three-track EP titled “Video Call Demos” on Soundcloud and Bandcamp; all written, recorded, and released within the last few months. Of the three songs, “Spider Song” has since been released on Spotify. This jam is full of soothing harmonies, and seemingly blends psychedelic jazz sounds with that of modern indie rock. Keep an eye out for Flamango Bay’s new single “Drive” that is set to release on October 16th!
