A punk quartet hailing from Huntington Beach, Lacker combines punk with the essentials of surf rock to showcase their ridiculous amount of talent and passion. Entering the scene earlier this year, they have already made a name for themselves. In May, Lacker released That So K, a four-track EP that gave a proper introduction to the sound and style of the band. “You Didn’t Know” combines groovy chords and an intense, rhythmic pick-up, detailing a shift from soft surf rock to punk with the help of Charlie Martin’s heavy drums. The track “I Can’t Breathe” displays the raspy undertones of lead vocalist, Gavin Hanshaw, and the angsty lyrics of “Leave Me Alone,” especially you tell me to go away / I would gladly say okay, contribute to the song’s overall message of overattachment and the importance of individual liberty and creativity.
In August, Lacker released two singles, “Credit” and “Stuck.” “Credit” is my favorite Lacker song out there. It’s a song that makes you want to dance and scream the lyrics “Do it for yourself, for your own good,” with your friends. The rapid pick up of the chorus and franticness of the bridge creates the perfect hype for the song. There are eccentric chords sprinkled throughout the verses, and the slow build up to the chorus keeps the listener yearning with anticipation to scream the lyrics.
October brought about the most recent release from the band. “Push” portrays clear influences from bands like The Frights, a common influence found in Lacker’s music. Jack Quintanar’s deafening guitar collaborates with kinetic drums in the chorus and compliment the deep, defining bass lines of Cole Jack.
This is just the beginning for Lacker. They have had a busy year; clearly, they have been releasing an abundance of music, but they have also played a handful of shows. If you happen to be in the San Diego area, they’re playing at Queen Bee’s on November 22nd. On December 27th they’re playing at the beloved Constellation Room in Santa Ana with other ALTANGELES favorites, Joynoise and Sitting on Stacy—now that’s a show you won’t want to miss!
